Fidel Castro’s Childhood and Family

Fidel was released a couple of decades later. However, Castro didn’t give up. He moved to Mexico and proposed his second revolution. There he met Che Guevara who would eventually become a significant pioneer in his revolution. Castro and Guevara returned using a little army to Cuba on December 2, 1956. They were immediately defeated by Batista’s military. They started a guerrilla war against Batista. Over time they accumulated several fans and finally overthrew Batista’s government on January 1, 1959.
Fidel as Dictator of Cuba
In July of 1959, Castro took over as chief of Cuba. He ruled for almost 50 decades. Castro was a follower of Marxism and he used this doctrine in creating a new government for Cuba. The government took over much of all the trade and business. They also took charge of several farms and businesses owned by Americans. Freedom of speech and of course the media was severely restricted. Opposition to his rule was generally dealt with imprisonment and even execution. A lot of people fled the nation.
The Bay of Pigs Invasion
The United States attempted many times to remove Castro from power. In 1961, in the bay of pigs invasion, approximately 1,500 Cuban exiles trained by the CIA landed in Cuba in order to overthrow the Castro government. The invasion was a tragedy with the vast majority of the invaders killed or captured.
Allies with Soviet Union
Following the Bay of Pigs, Castro allied his government together with the Soviet Union. He enabled the Soviet Union to place nuclear missiles in Cuba which could hit the United States. Following a tense stand-off involving the United States and the Soviet Union that almost started World War III, the missiles were eliminated.
Fidel Castro’s Death
Castro’s health started to fail in 2006. He died on November 25, 2016, at the ripe old age of 90. His brother Raol Castro took over and became the President of Cuba after his death. Today the President of Cuba is Miguel Díaz-Canel size 2018.
